The station of Floresta dos Leões, later called Carpina, on the Estrada de Ferro Recife a Limoeiro, the old Great Western line, situated 60 kilometers from Recife. Note the switches for train signals in the foreground of this 1907 view. Standing alongside the switches is the famous photographer Francisco du Bocage, whose pictures were reproduced in many postcards. In 1901 Great Western linked this line with two railways it had leased in the states of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte – the Conde d’Eu and Natal to Nova Cruz, respectively – thus forming Great Western’s Rede Norte [Northern Network].
