GREETINGS FROM BRASIL:
THE POSTCARD IN BRAZIL

A Portrait of Brazilian Cities
Carlos Cornejo e João Emilio Gerodetti

An allegorical postcard, dated 1899, with captions in French and insets of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória, pictured here in 1842 at Praça Duque de Caxias, now Largo do Machado; the Grande Hotel Metrópole in Laranjeiras, 1894, where the Igreja do Cristo Redentor sits today; the Jardim Botânico, created by Dom João VI in 1808; and Ilha Fiscal, home to a neo-Gothic castle inaugurated in 1889.

To the right, a beautiful panorama of the Catete and Flamengo districts, with Pão de Açúcar in the distance.
